Introduction:

As the new year begins, it’s time to assess your insurance coverage for both yourself and your family. Do you have what you need to protect your future? If you have not had an annual review, now is the time to find an independent insurance agent who can evaluate your needs and your coverage and educate you on options to bridge the gap if there is one.

If you are above the age of 65, if you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and missed the AEP (Annual Enrollment Period), you can make changes during OEP (Open Enrollment Period), which runs from January 1 to March 31. During this period, eligible individuals can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or switch back to Original Medicare.

If you are are within 3 months of your 65th birthday and have not scheduled a Medicare Education appointment with a licensed independent insurance agent to go over your Medicare options, now is the time to do so. You are eligible for Medicare, a valuable benefit you have earned! You must enroll before the end of the 3rd month after your 65th birthday, or you will incure penalties for life.

If you are under 65 and have passed your annual Open Enrollment Period (OEP). you can make changes to your insurance plans if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

SEPs allow individuals to enroll in or modify their qualified health plans (QHPs) outside of the Open Enrollment Period (OEP). SEPs are triggered by specific life events, ensuring flexibility for individuals facing changing circumstances. It’s essential to understand the criteria for eligibility and the variety of events that can grant access to an SEP.

Eligibility Criteria for Special Enrollment Periods

Loss of Qualifying Health Coverage:

  • Important Note: This SEP excludes coverage loss due to nonpayment of premiums.

Change in Household Size:

  • Any adjustments to the number of individuals in a household can trigger an SEP.

Change in Primary Place of Living:

  • Relocating to a new residence that provides access to different QHPs qualifies for an SEP.

Change in Eligibility for Marketplace Coverage or Financial Assistance:

  • Any alterations in eligibility for Marketplace coverage or assistance with coverage expenses trigger an SEP.

Enrollment or Plan Error:

  • SEP eligibility is granted in the event of errors during enrollment or plan selection.

Estimated Annual Household Income Below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL):

  • Individuals with household incomes below 150% of the FPL can enroll in an SEP.

Loss of Medicaid or CHIP Coverage Between March 31, 2023, and July 31, 2024:

  • SEP eligibility is extended to individuals experiencing a loss of Medicaid or CHIP coverage within the specified time frame.

Other Situations and Exceptional Circumstances:

  • SEPs are available for unique situations and exceptional circumstances, ensuring a comprehensive approach to individual needs.

Enrollment Period and Special Considerations

  • In most cases, consumers have 60 days from the qualifying event date to enroll in coverage.
  • Members of federally-recognized Indian tribes or Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) Corporation shareholders can enroll or modify plans monthly throughout the year without requiring another qualifying life event.

Understanding Special Enrollment Periods is crucial for navigating the complexities of health insurance coverage. By staying informed about eligibility criteria and available resources, individuals can make informed decisions about their healthcare, ensuring that they have access to the coverage they need when life events necessitate changes.
